“Get what you like else you will have to like what you get”, I remember my father saying to me quite often during my student years.
It’s only now that I realise the wisdom behind those words. Most of us aspire to work in a MNC while we slog through the management classes and engineering colleges. Blindly following the bandwagon, not many at that age have the insight or the guidance to take a step back and see where they are heading. That’s one of the reasons why most are discontented with their careers. But there are people around us, men and women, who had the guts to go for a change, go for what they felt was their calling in life.
Growing up Amoruso was detected with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and had to drop out of school. Life became harder as her family faced financial setbacks. She struggled through her early years of adulthood, working in various low paying jobs. In 2006 Sophia Amoruso started her new venture, with neither experience nor a college degree to her name. But what she had was an eye for style and good instincts. She started off by selling affordable clothing, both vintage and new on eBay. She would collect vintage pieces from thrift shops, style them, make her friends model in them and put up the photographs on the website stores. She made something that had zero value, looked stunning and irresistible, each a unique piece. Amoruso broke away from traditional methods of advertising and instead used online social media like Facebook, Instagram, and twitter to her full advantage to market her clothing. “…..you sell things for more than you bought them”, has been Amoruso’s business mantra. In 2008 Amoruso shifted the Nasty Gal Vintage from the eBay to www.nastygal.com., she had 350 employees working for her and had more than a million followers on Facebook and Instagram.

Before Adventure Life became a successful venture it faced initial years of struggle. To make the two ends meet Brian took up a day job and worked on his start up during the evenings and weekends. Brian’s wanderlust and his years of perseverance finally paid off. In the year 2000 Adventure Life took tours to Peru and Ecuador and thereon there was no looking back. New tours were added in the subsequent years not just to South America but to various other parts of the world as well. Dr. Berk started her career as a clinical psychologist after completing her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. In her early 40s she decided to take up humour as her second career. A change in career wasn’t easy decision; it entailed major risk, especially financially. Nancy went ahead with her plans partly because her husband and she had saved a decent amount over the years and also because her husband took over the complete financial responsibility of the family. But this decision paid off, she is today a renowned humourist and columnist known for incorporating humour with her understanding of human mind. She is often very aptly described as “Dr. Phil meets Tina Fey”. In 2011 Nancy authored a book, ‘COLLEGE BOUND AND GAGGED’. The book was about the stresses and anxiety faced by both the children and parents while preparing for college admission and it suggests ways to deal with the situation. The book was a success and was featured in a motion picture, Admission, ironically, starring Tina Fey.
Johnny, born with a penchant for business, tried his hand at 16 different business ideas before he was even 16 years of age, everything from shovelling snow to yard sales to magic. A musician by profession, he was often jokingly called Johnny Cupcake by his co-workers when he worked in a music shop. Around 2001, during one of the concerts of his metalcore band, he got a few “Johnny cupcake” printed t-shirts just for fun. His friends and colleagues liked them so much they wanted to buy them. Johnny started selling the t-shirts from the trunk of his car and from his suitcase while he toured with his band. Soon after, he started selling his merchandise from an e-commerce store. Seeing the success he had Johnny opened his first retail space in Hull, in 2005. Since then his business has expanded exponentially. Johnny’s business strategy involves focusing on product packaging and unique customer experience; he wants his customers to feel like ‘it’s their birthday’ every time they purchase a Johnny Cupcake product.
A shift in career won’t happen overnight. It would probably take months, even years of planning and preparation. But beyond that lies the path you chalked out for yourself and success just might be round the corner.
